Default Suse 11.1 and Nvidia FX 5700LE: Drivers Install But Don't Work

Just did a fresh install of OpenSuse 11.1 over the network and am having a hell of a time getting my Nvidia FX 5700LE card to display my screen's native resolution of 1600x1200.

Here are my system specs:

Suse 11.1
P4 Prescott processor (1)
2.6.27.7-9 pae kernel
Nvidia FX 5700LE (256 MB) -- PC ID 0x0343
ViewSonic VP201b LCD display

During Suse install I selected the appropriate versions of glib, gcc, make, the kernel source, header, and syms packages, etc.

I went to nvidia.com and downloaded the latest stable driver for my card (173.14.18) and installed the package as directed using the "sh NVIDIA-x86..." command.

No errors were given during the install process, and none appear in /var/logs/nvidia-installer.log.

Here is my xorg.conf file:

Am I perhaps using the wrong kernel and Nvidia driver versions? What am I missing?

Thanks,

Have you tried installing the ready made RPM packages instead? Not sure which version is available though.

How is your PC connected to the monitor, DVI or VGA?
Most 5xxx cards have a low pixelclock frequency on DVI, meaning the resolution they can handle via DVI is lower that via VGA. If connected via DVI you may have to add this to the monitor section of xorg.conf: Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck,NoEdidMaxPClkCheck"

You might try the driver from the Yast Community Nvidia repository? I never had a issue using it.

I'm going to try the mode validation tweak when I get home. Thanks for that advice.

I wasn't having luck with the Nvidia repositories. The 173 series driver didn't work, and I noticed later that it seemed intended for the 2.6.27.18-3 kernel, while at that time I had the 2.6.27.19-3. I don't think the Nvidia repository is in sync with the OpenSuse one right now. But I'll see what it suggests when I get home later. Maybe it's changed in the meantime.

YES! The pixel clock check mod worked! Thank you!

Update: Upon entering that option line in xorg.conf, I was able to display at my screen's native resolution of 1600x1200. However, there is now a bunch of moving red pixels, sort of like television snow but milder. Maybe digital noise?

Anyone seen this before and know how to fix it?

Thanks,

Jeff

This is probably because of the low pixel clock frequency. I have seen this earlier with a FX5700 card. But my MythTV box has a FX5500 card which has no problem running 1920x1080 to my Full HD LCD TV trough a DVI to HDMI adapter. This TV supports 24, 50 and 60 Hz refresh rates.
