Default geforce mx 400 64 mb not quite working on ubuntu 8.10

Hi
I have a geforce mx 400 64 mb nvidia card , quite old , and installed ubuntu 8.10
I have used envy ng to install the 96 drivers , and the nvidia settings app
when plugging tv in the nvidia settings can 'see' the tv , and adjusting the brightness on the nvidia settings adjusts the brightness on the tv so something is going on
I have googled and searched and spend hours and hours , I cannot get the tv out to work as a twin view , has anyone got any ideas
thanks
