The tearing is a known issue. The devs say it will be fixed soon.

I'm in the same precise situation!!
It looks like they are not even considering this problem or at least think it's not so important to be solved quickly.
Let's hope the next release will fix it

180.44 is performing somewhat better for me than the previous ones, for quite a number of previous releases.
Does anybody have the same experience ?

(I have a 8500GT, kernel 2.6.28.7)

No all benchmarks run faster, but some of them do, with 5-10%.
E.g. the Cg demo applications, cgfx_interfaces and cgfx_bumpdemo2.

(and glxgears too, which is not a benchmark, just before someone pastes the obligatory wiki link in a reply with big red font )

My card is a 7000M (Compaq Presario F756NR). So far 180.44 64-bit is working fine. No screen lockups and the fan is not spinning out of control. On fedora 10, it seems to be a little bit faster than 180.29.

These problems are sometimes caused because the new driver demands more performance from your hardware than the old driver. Is your power supply sufficient ?
