The remark about other 9500GT may have been off, i remember seeing some post when googling that made me beleive other have problems with 9500GT.

I am really tired of this problem, i think i will return this crap too and get another 9600GT. I have been really happy with the 9600GT i have (Gainward 9600GT 512MB GS), its quiet and cool (34C idle, 40+C load) compared to this fanless 9500GT which goes to 70C at load and have really hot naked (not cooled) memories on the back.

People should stay away from the Gainward 9500GT, perhaps 9500GT in general.

The temperature of the graphic card (and it's components) are irrelevant as long as they don't exceed 90c or the like. Gainward designed its 9500GT with its cooler in a way that it can't overheat in a case with adequate airflow.

Really, 70c is not a problem at all. I'd use passive cooling everywhere if I could, even if it meant my CPU would reach 70c at load

Yes, you are right. I was a little pissed when i wrote that.
Anyway, i am more happy now. Sent the 9500GT back and bought a new 9800GTX+ for my desktop and use my old 9600GT in my server/htpc (a bit overkill). VDPAU ok on both my computers now.
I still think people should stay away from Gainward 9500GT though.
Btw, no response from Gainward yet.

Were they testing VDPAU or DXVA on Windows? I don't have a 9500GT available to test right now, but I do have another card with the same chip that I'll double-check just in case.

FYI, I tested a board with the same GPU as a 9500GT and found no issues. Either there you just had bad luck with 2 boards, there really is something wrong with the board design, or something in your system configuration in combination with that board triggers some bug in the driver that I don't see. Sorry this isn't much help, but at least you have it working.

I assume it was on Windows. The store said they tested it and it did not work for them either.

I'm encountering similar difficulties with a 9500GT (Palit, DDR2 512MB) under XBMC on Ubuntu 8.10. If I replace it with an 8600GTS, VDPAU works beautifully. Drivers used are 185.13, 180.37, 180.44.

I tried switching to windows - DXVA failed to start on the 9500GT, but again, it worked fine for the 8600GTS, changing nothing but the cards. I can't find anything anywhere on the 'net with someone reporting success. Drivers on windows were 182.50 and one from a month or so ago (I forget which).

Has anyone actually got a 9500GT doing h264/vc1 hardware acceleration?

Yes, mine ( http://www.grosbill.com/index.php3?id=78981&site=kelkoo ) works without issues.

I also can not get my 9500GT (Gainward, 512MB, fanless) to work, here is my case:

I am using a Gainward 9500GT (according to Gainward produced i feb-09).
The environment used when testing is:
Ubuntu 08.10
CPU: AMD 8450 (3 cores slightly overclocked to 2.3GHZ)
Mem: 2GB
Drivers used when trying to get the 9500GT to work have been:
- 180.29
- 180.35
- 180.41
- 185.13
The logs below use the driver 180.44.

I have tested with two applications and logged according to:
- XBMC
- run nvidia-bug-report.sh
- xine
Both applications are VDPAU capable.

Using a ASUS 8600GT (fanless) card both applications work fine using the acceleration and displaying beautiful H.264 decoding.
When I switch to my Gainward 9500GT the XBMC shows a myriad of coloured dots and xine just exits.
I did not change anything else during the card swap.

I have attached a number of logs taken after XBMC was run and before xine was run.

The case with 9500GT seems to be a strange one. There are people reporting H.264 to work on 9500GT and as I understand they are using the linux drivers when it works.
My card is to be used in a HTPC therefore I would like to use the Gainward 9500GT which is fanless a does not generate as much heat as the 8600GT.

If more logs are needed I would be happy to send them.
A friend of mine has tried the same using X86-64 with the same problems.

NVIDIA PLEASE HELP!!

Are people with working cards running with DDR3 memory? The two logfiles I've seen that are broken are both DDR2...

Attached is my log file - it'd be a shame to have to try and take this card back, especially because the conversation with the shop assistant will be awkward...
