Default Testing VDPAU? yep but how?

I haven't followed the VDPAU story from the beginning and now I'm a bit confused.
I would like to test VDPAU with mplayer.
Should I compile mplayer svn from the mplayer web site? With additionnal patches?
Should I compile ffmpeg svn? With additionnal patches?

Sorry for the noise if there is a clear doc somewhere I could read to be sure I testing VDPAU with the correct softwares.

You should use MPlayer svn, as noted on these websites:

MPlayer svn contains FFmpeg, you don't have to worry about it / you should not try to compile your own FFmpeg shared libraries to use them with MPlayer.
