nv driver with HP 30" not getting 2560x1600 - only 1280x800

I use the nv driver because the nvidia driver is closed source and the nv driver has been in a way audited by the open source community for security bugs, etc. The Nvidia programmers may be good and know their hardware but obviously no one is perfect and it's better and safer to use an open source driver in this case. Now if Nvidia would consider releasing hardware specs so the open source community can get to work on a driver then that would be better and they can use the resources of thousands of programmers in the community.

Why doesn't nv support it on those cards? The card obviously has the hardware features to do it and it won't be cutting into the nvidia driver 3d features so no proprietary hardware specs would be divulged if that's the reason.

besides that, I don't think I was using Xv when I used to use the nvidia drivers and the video didn't look blocky. Sometimes even when using nvidia drivers in Linux or in Windows, the video looked blocky and a reboot fixed it (haven't rebooted yet as I'm working ).

Because the 3D engine is too complicated to get working reliably in such a simple driver. Prior to G80, the 2D engine had the required colorspace conversion logic needed for Xv, but G80 and up don't have that. I would really recommend using the nvidia driver if you want to play video.

You mean there isn't a separate 2D engine in the 8800GTX that does video scaling and that the nividia driver uses the 3D engine or something like that?

I thought the CPUs are fast enough to do the scaling totally in software and not look blocky.
