Metal Gear Solid without the insane Japanese story or 2 hour cutscenes would be awesome.

the thief games were the best games i ever played, in regards to being immersed in the story. the sounds, the guards tlaking to themselves, them trying to find you.
and i loved the slightly magical/religious setting too. |

It's not the same game. Quite different.
Also, Splinter Cell hasn't been Splinter Cell since Chaos Theory, and the new one looks even more different.

I don't remember a good story, meeting with a fence, and just generally great gameplay in the Splinter Cell series... I remember VERY linear missions where 99% of the time you are not allowed to kill anything. I loved in the Thief series how you could find alternate routes and finding special items to sell to the fence... it was much better than anything Splinter Cell could imagine to be. People keep saying they are going to be the same, but I don't expect them to be anything alike, IF it even ends up being true that it will be in modern times, which it may not be. And trust me, I am usually VERY against change in great game series... but I have some confidence they can do this one right so long as they have the people who made the previous ones working on the new one.

There wasn't much news about the new SP in quite a while. Last thing they said was they will rework a very large chunk of the game. So i still have tiny bit of hope they will go back to the roots.

The one thing that Thief and Splinter Cell most have in common is atmosphere. In both games you feel so utterly immersed in what you're doing, it's just beautiful. The ambience effects in both games are certainly top notch, and this is something that simply MUST be transferred to newer titles. If this new Thief game would end up being the bees-bloody-knees of Thief games, but with horrible ambience / sound effects / music, then it could seriously drag it down.
Thief 1 & 2 had an extremely spooky atmosphere going, even with the limitations of the time. The way you first heard those spooky voices and zombie like shamblings in and about the mines of the intial levels of Thief 1... Don't know about you guys, but I **** myself. Thief 3 was much less 'serious' with its ambience, but it still had PERFECT (in my opinion) soundscapes. I loved firing an arrow at a Hammer Guard, running for my life and hiding in a patch of bushes or some dark alley, being able to hear them stealthing about out there, looking for me, calling for backup or taunting me... It's just that kind of thing that really makes such a huge difference. They NEED to get that right! Right?
