CPU Fan running faster than normal

The day before yesterday I noticed my processor fan was running faster than normal so I started Probe II and it was slowly cycling about 600 to 900 rpm faster than usual. I put it on the back burner because I was running a program that was mirroring a huge website in the background, which ended up being really huge so it took almost two days to mirror it.

This morning when I woke up the mirror was done but the cpu fan was still running faster than normal so I started thinking maybe one of the legs on my cpu cooler had come loose and the heatsink wasn't sitting straight anymore. So I took the side cover off to look at it but the problem turned out to be the case fan had quit running so things were just hotter than normal in the case. I figured I'd need a new case fan but since it was one of those antec 120 mm tri-cool fans I just flipped the switch to the middle position and it started running. So I figured the low speed was out but tried it again just to make sure and the fan kept running but at the slow speed. So I guess the contact on the switch had got corroded and quit making contact until I moved it some to clean it off.

So I turned the system off and flipped it through all three positions about 20 times to make sure it was clean and put the case back together. I figured I'd share this story in case someone else runs into the same thing so they can check their case fan right away instead of waiting like I did. I could have easily looked at the back of the case and seen the fan wasn't running but I was more interested in keeping the system going to mirror the website... kind of a dumb thing to do.

Oh well... I don't think I caused any real problems since I monitored the cpu temperature and it didn't get that hot, but hotter than I wanted it to get... in the low 50s. So I learned the same lesson again, don't delay checking something out.

Interesting. My case is full of Antec Tri-Cools. I'll have to remember that if I ever have a problem with one.

I've used the same tri-cools for three re-builds now.... ah about 4 years and they are still running fine
