The same happens with Fedora 11, just in case you're wondering whether in F11 if it gets better. My machine is an Acer Aspire 5930g.

There's a thread on a similar problem and a solution was promised by an NVidia representative:

For Arch Linux, i created a file /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia and added line:
options nvidia NVreg_UseVBios=0
After reboot still have black terminal(screen turning off)

[c7m@c7m-laptop ~]$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/registry|grep UseVBios
UseVBios: 0

Thumbs up Re: No more black terminals after starting X!!!!

Switching from X to VT is back to normal, using a GeForce 9600M GT with the latest pre-release driver 180.60!

A big thank you to the NVidia devs!

Hi!

Are you using gdm? For me, Fedora 10 is extremely unstable with gdm:
switching to a text console typically works, but when switching to vt8,
then the system just hangs there. (Just tried it out with NVreg_UseVBios=0,
same problem).

The solution for me was to use xdm, instead, and to make sure that
xorg uses evdev (rather than the old kbd or mouse driver). And of
course, I made sure that any kind of graphical boot is disabled.

regards

Bernhard

On my laptop (Geforce Go 6200 TurboCache) I still have to set "UseVBios=0" even with 180.60

For my NB with OpenSuse 11, 64bit and nvidia 9800M GT, the beta driver 185.18.10 solves the problem with black virtual consoles

Fedora Core here.

Nouveau as well as the nvidia drivers (since 180.51) work nearly symbiotically together.
1440x900x32 on my shell seamlessly altered by nvidias prop driver upon DM init.

1.) get 2.6.29+ kernel
2.) use vga=ask to get a list upon boot
3.) bear in mind what you used (365 for me for instance)

To pass the correct option to your kernel you may use 0x365 (in my case) instead of higher counts, at least I didn't experience any problems ever since I handle it like that. Tried a lot of modesettings using vga=700 and above, but this finally fixed it, enabling a nicely looking shell, plymouth and smooth init of my display manager.

Gonna give the opengl3.0 beta driver I just wgot a try right now.
