ASUS MK241H LCD?

My CRT is starting to have some strange issues so I guess I'm finally going to make the change to an LCD.

I've been waiting to find a good screen for a very good price and after reading a lot of reviews I think I may have found the screen for me. This Asus 24" was praised as a good $550 screen just last year... and now its around $250.

I don't really care that its a TN panel, because it costs less than half as much as an IPS or PVA panel with similar features. According to anandtech it has a 98% color gamut which beats every screen except for the Dell 2408WFP. The response time is practically non-existent. The contrast ratio seems pretty good. It has a built in webcam and speakers (just a bonus really). Its HDCP compliant. Its also the only LCD that Asus sells that isn't a "value" model (MK241H vs. VK246H, VW266H etc...).

Basically, I'll be using it for gaming, watching movies (eventually HD movies once I get a BDROM) and browsing the web, from my desk. I've never owned an LCD before so I just want something that looks nice and doesn't interfere with what I've become accustomed to after using a high end CRT for several years.

But before I buy anything I'd like to hear what you guys think.

My only concern is overall image quality. I don't really know what bad LCDs look like, and I'd rather not find out the hard way if this one isn't up to snuff.

Personally, I wouldn't purchase an LCD monitor that's not a Dell or Samsung. Not only do they make excellent products, they also do a better job of supporting them than most. Their warranties include advance exchange, so if something goes wrong, they'll send you a new one first.

Personally I would get a 22" because @ 1680x1050 you can game pretty well with a single card. Trust me dude the panel does matter. The Dell 2209WA is a e-ISP panel and it kicksass not to mention movies look great because of the color gamut and the very good black. I would rather have a damn good 22 then a TN 24.

Eh, I can't go back to 1680x1050. I've been gaming at 1600x1200 for 5 years now. That'd be a downgrade for me. And yes, I would notice it.

How is the response time on IPS panels? All of the reviews I've read of PVA panels mention that if you're at all concerned about response times, do not get a PVA. That's the main thing I'm concerned about because even a tiny bit of display lag would have me using my CRT again. I can't stand that.

Also, I've heard good things about Samsung displays, but a friend of mine has a 32" 720P Samsung LCD and I wasn't all that impressed with it. The backlight is horribly uneven. It isn't even remotely close to being uniform when you're looking at a dark picture. That put me off of Samsung a bit, but I'd definitely still give them a shot if I had a recommendation for a specific screen.

My price is flexible, but $500 is out of the question when I can get a "decent" screen for $250.

For $400 I'd buy a good 24", but these appear to be mediocre 26" screens using an expensive display technology.

It also doesn't have HDMI.

Aren't there any 1920x1200 or even 1920x1080 IPS screens on the market for under $400?

That's the problem dude finding a 24" panel with small imput lag, good color, no bad backlit bleeding with good black blacks. With a TN panel the input lag is good but the backlit, color and viewing angle is horrible. To me IMO the IPS S-IPS and the e-IPS is the best balance. The reason I got the 22" is because I will get a new Video card soon and I want to run 99% of all the games out there @ 1680x1050 maxed out with Vsync on. I wanted a 24" really really bad and was willing to shell out 600+ for it but every time I found one I liked there was some damn issue with it, bleeding, banding, inputlag, response time, color gamut, viewing angle and on and on...............

Thanks mullet, I'm glad I'm not alone in wondering WTF is going on with 24" monitors.

The more I look around, the more it looks like even the top rated screens aren't ideal for everyone.

This monitor looks fantastic but I still don't like what they're saying about the input lag.

25ms average? That's horrible. It takes less time for my system to ping a Left 4 Dead server 1000 miles away than it takes for my monitor to display an image?

If I'm going to spend that much on a screen ($550 at newegg) it isn't going to have any problems that significant.

I think I'll just get a decent screen that fits my needs and is as cheap as possible. That way I don't have much of an investment into it. Once there are 120Hz 1920x1200 screens available at a decent price with great picture quality and low response times I'll spend the big bucks on a monitor.

Meh... the more I read the more concerned I get about the Asus MK241H's picture quality.

Backlight bleeding and banding would bother me as much as input lag.

Its extremely difficult to find a good RECENT comparison of 24" LCDs. Most are from 1-2 years ago when even the low end TN models were $500 so they were compared to IPS and PVA panels directly. Also, most LCD-related sites seem to be based in the UK so most of the models and brands are different.

This happens every time I start shopping for an LCD and its the reason I'm still using a CRT.

heh, this is probably the 3rd or 4th LCD thread of mine that ends like this, but I'm just going to stick to my CRT.

I've been spoiled for too long and I'm not wealthy enough to gamble on a display that will be inferior in some way to this old CRT that I paid $170 for (shipped) two years ago. I don't think any low end LCD will compare to a high end CRT that was originally $900, and there aren't any mid range or high end LCDs that are responsive enough for me to use for gaming.

There aren't really any options for me at this point. Unless I find an amazing deal on a great LCD, I'll be sticking with this thing until it fails. And after that I'll probably go back to my NEC 19" CRT.

Cap I don't even notice input lag on this 2209WA or my wife's 2007WFP. Trust me I am picky as hell to. I still have my NEC 22" CRT but it is a beast.
