Something went wrong, the files are still not attached.
Please retry

Oh, and create a new post instead of an edit, so I see that there were some changes.

Thanks. The bug report is a bit strange, he uses the nvidia provided OpenGL Module, but not the nvidia driver.

It seems that he is missing some parts in the xorg.conf, and falls back to a default (vesa) due to that.

Could you try to create a new xorg.conf with the

sudo nvidia-xconfig

command?

Kind regards

Fuchs

In process of rebooting, will forward next batch of error logs and will try what you asked. When I looked I could not find an xorg.conf file
Post reboot:
Errors on screen:
(EE) NVIDIA(0) Failed to load the NVIDIA Kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0) ***Aborting***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

I am clicking on OK button

My options are now to
1 Run Ubuntu in low-graphics mode for just one session
2 Reconfigure graphics
3 Troubleshoot the error
4 Exit to console login

This is where I was before and I ended up reloading the OS to get a usable system.

I am going with option 1.

Screen now says:
"There already appears to e an X server running on display :0. Should another display number be tried? Answering no will cause GDM to attempt starting the server on :0 again."

I know this will not work.

"(You can change consoles by pressing Ctrl-Alt plus a function key, such as Ctrl-Alt-F7 to go to console 7. Xervers usually run on consoles 7 and higher."
<yes> <no>
based on past experiance I will switch to anohter console now, by clicking on <yes>.
The system responds with:
The specified display number was busy, so this server was started on display :1.
<OK>
I clicked on <OK>

Got login GUI, logged-in and got low resolution 800x600 Ubuntu desktop.
I opened a terminal window and ran nvidia-xconfig and am rebooting now.
Once the reboot is done

reboot faster than I thought, More errors on the screen:
(EE) Failed to load module "type1" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "freetype" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA Kernal module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none havea usable configuration
<OK>
I will click on OK and then I will bring up FF on the ubuntu system and send more details and log files.
(from my windows pc)

Is this too much detail?

Yes, the nvidia bug report, as it contains the xorg logs and the xorg.conf in use. Plus other important informations.

However, after a quick overview, it seems that in most of the logs the vesa driver is used, and not nvidia. So the logs don't help us, sorry.

Probably we would need to make a step-by-step walkthrough.

So

1) Make sure the nvidia driver is installed. Do _not_ reboot
2) If you currently have a graphical environment, do sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
3) Run sudo nvidia-xconfig. Do _not_ reboot nor log out
4) open a terminal and type sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
5) You should be on a VT. If you are not, press CTRL+ALT+F1
6) log in with your user
7) run startx -- -logverbose 5
8) The graphical user interface should fail to come up. If you have a black screen instead, press CTRL+ALT+F1
9) run sudo nvidia-bug-report.sh
10) do cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf
10a) in case you had a black screen at point 8, do a sudo killall X
11) run sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

You should be back in the graphical environment, with a fresh nvidia bug report in your home folder.

As this bug report was created right after the problem occured, it should contain the information needed to help you. Upload it.

How do I tell if it is installed? What am I looking for and where should I look for it?
I think I am OK with the rest.

Well, unfortunately I have no debian based distribution at hand, so this might be wrong:

Please give me the output of

dpkg --get-selections | grep nvidia

(the | is a pipe character, copy & paste it if you are not sure where it is on your keyboard)

Looking at the nvidia-*-180-* modules in synaptic pkg mgr, it shows they are version "180.44-Oubntu1" and also that this is the latest version.

According to zander's post:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show....php?p=1985816

they only added support for the GeForce 9400 in 180.51

How do I get the newer version?
