A couple of questions. Does the vdpau decoder include some filters already? If not, is there any way to work the mplayer filters using vdpau? Such as deblocking/deringing filter

-vf pp=[options]

it can't be used with vdpau enabled, video stalls right away.

MPlayer does support noise-reduction and sharpness adjustment for VDPAU. Please refer to the fine manual for more information:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/man/en/...(MPLAYER ONLY)

The videofilters (vf) cannot be used currently with hardware accelerated decoding. Please let me note again that when this will be supported, it will ruin the speed effect on many actual configurations, so while I will probably work on an implementation, it might not be very useful for playback.

Thanks, that's good to know. The vf post processing isn't that effective in bettering the picture anyways. I don't know if deblocking/deringing could be implemented in vdpau but it would be nice.

For me too please. Deringing and deblocking is very useful for watching video clips on the Internet when resizing to full screen. ATI released this feature as Fullstream technology on Radeon 8500 (pixel shader 1.4). S3 Chrome has such feature in every Chrome GPU since pixel shader 2.0 (the amount of effect can be controlled by user using 7 steps slider) . I never found such possibility in any Geforce. So on Geforce GPU it may be not possible to do even having pixel shader 4.0. Opensource Nouveau Geforce driver supports bicubic scaling on Geforce 4Ti when binary Nvidia driver have only bilineral so this example shows some limitations may be driver architecture problem rather than hardware limitation. Nvidia does not offer bicubic and deblocking also in Windows so they may simply not have know-how to make it. This may be also the lack of time limitation. Nvidia is always focused more on 3D than video or 2D. However the impressive success of VDPAU and XRender acceleration show that Nvidia is learning so I'm sure some day deblocing/deringing and better scaling algorithm will appear on Geforces. The low resolution/blocky video clips on the Internet, (which really need quality improvement during display) are very popular and I think Nvidia will not overlook this market to satisfy customers with new visible improvement the customer can see very often.

The display problem is along the bottom edge of the picture. It appears to be some type of pixelation, but always along the bottom of the frame. The pixelation almost looks like a dynamic bar graph. The "bars" are white and vary in height. Best I can describe. Please look at the example.
We've fixed this bug. The fix will be in a future 185.* driver, but probably not the very next one.

Thank you. I look forward to it. I'm still curious what the cause was.

Default mplayer vdpau

Help
I have an acer aspire revo (windows version reloaded with umbuntu jaunty) wich has the Nvidia ion gpu and intel Atom processer.
I can sucessfully use xbmc and enable vdpau and all is well, upto 30% cpu usage on killa.mkv 1080p clip
but i can't get any clip to use vdpau under mplayer
I'm using the latest nvidia drivers 180.60
also i have patched mplayer with the mplayer-vdpau-3532130.tar.bz2 from nvidia ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/vdpau/)

all i get are Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device now i can play the file not using vdpau but with 100% cpu so thats a no go

can anyone help

thanks
Joe

Instead of patching mplayer yourself w/ nvidia's patches, you should either use a repository that has latest mplayer SVN, since it needs no patching or just compile mplayer from SVN yourself.

I think the nvidia patches are history, they have been merged/corrected/improved into mplayer for months IIRC.

You might want to try searching your distro's forum first:

You will have to explain what does not work.

Is svn checkout failing (how)? Please post your command and the complete output.
Is ./configure failing (how)? Please post the output and attach configure.log.
Is make failing (how)? Please run make again and post the output of the repeated call.
Is the MPlayer executable failing (complete, uncut output needed)?
