PC gaming hardware sales better than consoles

JPR said that the market for PC hardware is so robust that it will actually top the amount of money consumers spend on console gaming hardware (HDTV, accessories and the console itself) by nearly $2 billion this year.
“PC gaming systems seem to have suffered the least discounting [as a result of the recession,] which illustrates the value consumers place on such systems,” JPF said in a statement.

The report split the 'PC gaming hardware' revenues -- actually a percentage of each PC system's revenue based on the consumer's wish to play games on it -- into three areas: Enthusiast, Performance, and Mainstream for both desktop and the newly emerging notebook category.

It was designed to outline the distribution of branded sales (HP, Alienware, etc), non branded ("White box"), aftermarket component sales and DIY sales, as well as peripheral sales of gaming components.

Game playing-specific PC market sales based on the the consumer's gaming predilection -- which includes a percentage for the monitor, accessories and the PC itself – reached $20.07 billion in 2008, JPR found. The firm expects sales to decline 7 percent in 2009 to $18.66 billion in 2009.

JPR said that PC gaming continues to do relatively well despite the recession because “people are staying home more, less movies, less dinners out, postponed vacations, and turning to other forms of entertainment. PC gaming is a very economical form of entertainment. A $50 game can provide hundreds of hours of play, and it's not uncommon for players to replay a game.”

The firm added, “Also, purchases of a PC for gaming can be shared since the machine can be used for watching (and creating) videos, as well as office work and web browsing, something consoles can't offer.”

Also console game prices are regulated more. Why spend all the time on PC to sell 1 million copies at $40 a piece when you can sell more copies at $60 a piece? Granted MS/Sony take a cut of that, but still it generates more revenues.

Another faggot. Go read first than post. Developer got less money from console game than the same game but in Pc version. Publishing and producing PC game costs are much lower and you don't need to pay tax for MS and Sony. MS and Sony propaganda is making **** with your heads.

Also, crysis...made by crytek, who are rapidly expanding and just bought a UK based CONSOLE developer after their ps3 exclusive failed to recoup production costs.

"next gen" consoles are losing developers and publishers vast amounts of money. When EA of all companies is posting loss after loss then something is very wrong.

Just remember what devs took care of their PC gaming customers and did not consolize their game to make a quick buck when the cycle comes back around.

I'm not saying PC customers are any better then console customers. Hell, console customers should want the same thing. If you're going to sell me a product then support the damn thing, I could care less if you made X more $$ on Y platform you sold me something now show some respect.

The profits they are claiming are including EVERYTHING PC Based, from monitors to the entire PC Unit. It is not a fair comparison... If you included HDTV Sales in with console sales it would be bigger but Console numbers only include actual console software/hardware sales. Again your comparing a smaller industry to a much much larger one.

fizzelopeguss, EA and every other major publisher has not announced any loss... just that they made less then they expected, never have they gone into the Red. Activisions Net Revenue for 2008 was almost double that of 2007... yeah im sure their hurting... If nextgen consoles were losing developers and publishers so much money they wouldn't support the platforms but their doing the opposite, they are increasing their support... Grow a brain...

Oh and crytek bought a company that failed with an exclusive that wasn't good... yeah... lets all buy failures, thats a winning business strategy. Free Radical is a developer caught in the past, they couldn't adapt to the new generation of game design and programming... if you played Hazed you would see how old the game looked even though it was released just last year.

Oh and another about Crytek... Their next game is going console... that says alot of where they see their own future. So don't pretend that they are PC's Golden Knight.

I think Developers are taking care of their customers as best as they can. Games in general are starting to cost alot. Patching and adding free content does not generate revenue and help with their next game development. It has come down to big publishers funding development so they get only so much resources to spread around.

But look at games like Call of Duty, Burnout and Halo (or other popular online games), I think they are supported great and possibly as good as past titles.
