Default Not able to start XServer under Fedora, Ubuntu (with Quadro FX 570)

Hello,

I received a new computer with Quadro FX 570 Cards in them. I wanted to set up Linux (initally Fedora), but I have not been able to activate the XServer with either Fedora or Ubuntu 9.04.
When trying to install Fedora, I initially get the normal CD Install Screen, but it falls back to text-only installation with the next menu. It's pretty much the same with Ubuntu, XServer cannot be started.

When installing the appropriate drivers from the nVidia Homepage and trying to boot the XServer, it failed with the Xorg log showing the following message:

Quote:
(II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
(II) Module dri: vendor="X.Org Foundation"

Fatal server error:
no screens found
dmesg shows the following message concering nvidia:

Quote:
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.

As far as I can see none of these messages seem to be problematic. From what I've read, the card itself should be supported, the drivers installed without a hitch (apart from XServer not starting that is). I searched around a lot, I found the 'no screen found' message a couple of times with no solutions appliable to me. I even tried to use basic "vega" drivers as an alternative, but that didn't work either. The cards seem to be working perfectly as Windows is running smoothly, the cards can be used without a problem.

I've attached the nvidia-bug-report.log.gz, as requested in the sticky posts. I'd appreciate it someone could help me with this problem, or at least tell me if it's hopeless to try using this card with Linux, so I can settle with the alternative.

Cheers,

a few informations would be helpful...

1. did you use the Live-CD with ubuntu, if yes, did you get to the desktop?

2. did you use 64-Bit Versions because you have 4 GB Ram? If yes try with 32-Bit...

3. what kind of video cable do you use? vga, dvi or hdmi?what kind of monitor?CRT, LCD?

I've used 64bit with either Fedora and Ubuntu (Windows both 32 and 64, but that's beside the point). I thought about testing a 32bit version shortly after I wrote the post, but I did not yet try (no time). I'll try as soon as I have time (off work now)

The FX 570 I have only has two DVI outputs and I'm using LCD Screens. The Motherboard doesn't have an onboard Monitor Outlet.[/quote]

if the 32-Bit version doenst work, try using the 185.18.14 Driver. This one is at least for me bugfree. Also a newer Kernel or Xorg version might help. that the vesa driver didn't work is surprising, but try the nv driver instead, maybe that one can at least give you a clue.

I'm not sure what you mean with "nv driver"

The kernel and xorg version I'm using are those that come with the current distribution/update, I think they should be pretty current, at least more current than a graphics card that came onto the market in september 2007 :/

There are three types of X drivers for nVidia cards.

nv - Open source 2D only driver. Developed/maintained by Aaron from nVidia (AaronP on this board)
nouveau - Open source, reverse engineered driver. 2D, some 3D
nvidia - Closed source, proprietary driver.

The Problem seems to have been solved. There were two FX 570 in the computer (seemingly in SLI mode not sure) which no Linux distribution could handly... I removed one of these two cards and it was possible to get the XServer going normally!

Then you might have to add the device lines manually to your Xorg.conf (with PCI addresses).
