Default X 1.6 && 180.60 && Xinerama: crashes with sig 11 after some time

Hello,

I'm running 8-CURRENT and the 180.60 nvidia driver which works without any kind of problem; yesterday I started using Xinerama (to prepare some presentation where the external monitor supports only 1024x768). I used 'nvidia-settings' to configure the 2nd display in that resolution (the laptop has 1920x1200) and enabled the Xinerama Option;

after restart of X with 'X -retro -logverbose 6' (via .xinitrc and .xserverrc) the desktop comes up fine on both displays and I can drag over (for example) the Firefox3 to run the presentation on the 1024x768 display. After a while (some 5-10 minutes) the server crashes with signal 11.

I'm attaching the nvidia-bug-report.log.gz after such crash.
Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks

Hello,

I'm running 8-CURRENT and I use the 180.60 driver too. Xorg seems to have no problems. Relating to xinerama I have this in my logs:

$ grep -i xinera /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(II) Loading extension XINERAMA
(II) Initializing built-in extension XINERAMA

Still I have seen no crashes.

Also is it possible for you to try and compile the vdpinfo utility which links with the nvidia-vdpau libs ? I think there is some trouble there too.

If you need me to run any more tests, please tell me.

Hello,

If I do the same grep I will get:

$ grep -i xinera /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(**) Option "Xinerama" "1"
(**) Xinerama: enabled
(**) NVIDIA(1): Option "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "CRT-0"
(II) Initializing built-in extension XINERAMA

Are you really using the Xinerama with a second display? The crashes only occure if I have a second display attached or after having plug'ed off this display but the Xinerama view is still active. When I restart Xorg after this without changing anything in the xorg.conf file, there is no crash at all.

This morning I have updated (i.e. switched back) to version 180.44 which is in -CURRENT in the /usr/ports; same crash after nearly one hour this time.

Concerning the mentioned tool 'vdpinfo', what do you want me to do with this? Is this somekind of test tool?

Thanks for your feedback in any case.

@gurucubano: can you capture a backtrace of the X server crash with gdb?

Would it be sufficiant to attach gdb to the X server from a remote SSH session like

# gdb /usr/local/bin/X pid

and wait for the crash or do you want be to rebuild X (...) with DEBUG option? Thx

Hello zander,

I attached two times a gdb from a SSH session to the running X server with 180.44 and have here the two backtraces. They are looking similar and I think the problem is reproduceable. In both situations the crash occured while I was typing something into a text window (in X.bt1 into a xterm and in X.bt2 into a Skype text session). Hope it helps. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks for your time

Thanks for the backtraces, gurucubano. None of these backtraces point to a problem in the NVIDIA driver, but rather a problem in the mouse handling code in the X server. I would suggest filing a bug at bugs.freedesktop.org.

The attached patches against Xorg 1.6.1 seem to resolve this issue, as well as an issue where there is a mouse pointer left on each screen. The files can be dropped into ports/x11-servers/xorg-server/files/ to build a package including them.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20744

Hope this helps.

Hello Zingelman,

I've applied the above three patches as you describe in the ports dir ports/x11-servers/xorg-server/files/ of 1.6.0, created the new package xorg-server-1.6.0,1.tbz and installed this on my laptop. I can confirm that this is fine now, no more crashes.

Thanks to you, zander, AronP and all others for the helping hand.
