There's LOTS of advantages.

You may not be able to run games or anything, but you can run an entirely contained OS within another one. Like six said, it's good for preventing virus infections, but it's also good for running old software on an older OS (ie, install Windows 98 to run certain programs).

Virtual machines most beneficial uses are really in the corporate environment though. Allows you to run a machine from anywhere virtually. For example, your company only has a few licenses of the software, so they create a virtual machine that is hosted on their servers and employees can run an instance of the virtual machine from anywhere (including online from their homes).

I like using Virtual Machines for running Linux on my Windows 7 PC. Also, with many programs, there are add-ons that allow the two OS's to communicate seamlessly (ie drag and drop files from the guest OS to the host OS and vice versa).

Yeah I got it,sounds like it could have advantages.Doesnt WIN7 have a virtual winxp option or something like this that will be released with the RTM WIN7 ?

It was rumored that Win7 will have the ability to run programs in XP compatibility mode, which will essentially be the same as emulating the XP environment for the program to run.

Don't know if it will be in RTM though. It's a great idea nonetheless.

Yes, it's basically a copy of WinXP using VirtualPC. HOWEVER, the minimum requirements are a little outrageous IMO. I'd rather use a lighter VM client like Virtualbox but that's just me.

Ooh, virtualized OpenGL. That could be useful. I might have to give this a try even if it's not in Portage yet.
