Default Signal 11 in Descent3

I've been smoothly playing the Loki's version of Descent3 for ages under all versions of Mandriva until now in a Pentium 4, 768 MB, and a GeForce 6200. Now, under Mandiva 2009.1, kernel 2.6.29.3-desktop-1mnb and Nvidia 180.51 drivers I can't even start the game, as I always got the error message "SIGNAL 11 caught, aborting". I have no problems with other 3D applications or games and I am wondering if this problem could be a driver issue. Could it be?

Wow, I haven't played that game in ages! I'll have to find one of my several copies and try to get it working again.

It certainly could be a driver issue. Please see the forum sticky posts about how to report a problem and also paste the output of the game when it crashes. If you could run it in gdb and get a backtrace from the crash, that would be especially helpful.

Here is what I got with gdb:

$ gdb descent3
GNU gdb 6.8-6mdv2009.1 (Mandriva Linux release 2009.1)
Copyright (C) 2008 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>

This GDB was configured as "i586-mandriva-linux-gnu"...
(no debugging symbols found)
(gdb) run
Starting program: /usr/local/bin/descent3
[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]
[New Thread 0xb7c5a6c0 (LWP 20105)]
[New Thread 0xb72bcb90 (LWP 20108)]
[Thread 0xb72bcb90 (LWP 20108) exited]

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x0824a176 in XMapRaised () at MapRaised.c:38
38 {
(gdb) c
Continuing.
SIGNAL 11 caught, aborting

Program exited normally.
(gdb)

Not so informative, huh?

An additional info could be that the sreen becames somewhat whitened when the program receives the signal SIGSEGV, a get back to normal aspect when it aborts.

I've attached the nvidia bug report.

Instead of continuing with 'c', please obtain a backtrace with 'bt' after gdb catches the segmentation fault.

I can't get it to crash, it works fine for me. That backtrace doesn't indicate a problem with the NVIDIA driver, so I'd recommend contacting Mandriva support.
