Default GeForce 9600 GSO recognized but not used

I have an AMD Phenom 9950 running 64-bit Ubuntu 9.04. Previously I had 32-bit Debian 5.0 on it (see this thread) but I switched, for reasons unrelated to this post. I should also point out I've avoided the mistake I made in that thread. The system detects the following display adapters:
Code:
sudo lshw -C display
  *-display
       description: VGA compatible controller
       product: GeForce 8300
       vendor: nVidia Corporation
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0
       version: a2
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: pm msi bus_master cap_list
       configuration: driver=nvidia latency=0 module=nvidia
  *-display
       description: VGA compatible controller
       product: GeForce 9600 GSO
       vendor: nVidia Corporation
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0
       version: a2
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
       configuration: driver=nvidia latency=0 module=nvidia
However, I can only use the on-board 8300. I set the BIOS to automatically disable the on-board GPU if another card is detected, but it still opts for the 8300. There is no output from the 9600, and nvidia-settings doesn't show it. I tried installing the binary 185.18.14 driver from NVIDIA's website but compiling the module fails, so for now I'm just using the 180.44 driver provided with Ubuntu. I've also tried explicitly adding BusID "PCI:3:0:0" to the "Configured Video Device" in the Device section of xorg.conf, but X won't start after that.

Default Re: GeForce 9600 GSO recognized but not used

X has also been very unstable lately. Each time I boot I find this in /var/log/syslog:
Code:
Jun 23 21:04:10 burbank kernel: [ 33.099386] NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x31:0xffffffff:1018)
Jun 23 21:04:10 burbank kernel: [ 33.099400] NVRM: rm_init_adapter(1) failed
Google searches seem to indicate a firmware update may solve this. I'd like to exhaust any possible software solutions first before I go messing with the firmware, though.
