Yes, 9400GT is supported. It has a G96 GPU.

What is more powerful?
a 9400GT (G96) or a 8400gs (G98)..

My 9400GT is unable to perform any of the 2X deinterlacer for HD content

Within a GPU series (G8x, G9x, ...) the smaller the last digit, the higher the performance. So, G96 is more powerful than G98.

I should point out that whilst the above rule is true for G8x and G9x, it may or may not apply to any other existing ranges, and it may/may-not change in the future.

Also note that the G98 supports VC-1 decoding, while the G96 afaik does not.

Is this still true? I'm trying to weigh up if I should get a 8400GS or 9400GT.

This may not be an issue for me though. Without wanting to sound tooo dumb, how extensively used is VC-1? - I don't recall ever trying to decode that before, not knowingly anyway.

Should I care about this?

This is no longer a problem, current drivers offer partial VC-1 acceleration on cards that do not do it fully in hardware.
