Default NVidia ION and hdmi sound

I have my ION running Ubuntu 9.04 connected directly to my Sony Bravia KDL40Z4100 TV with HDMI. From my TV I connected the optical out to my Denon receiver. My Denon is older and does not have HDMI inputs. When I play any music or any video that is stereo I have no problems with sound on my TV or the Denon. When I play DD or DTS my TV sound is all static/white noise, but my Denon plays the audio fine in surround sound. In the past when I used my desktop machine with a Asus EN9500GT with HDMI my TV would play the stereo and DD stuff and there would be no sound on the TV for DTS, my sony downmixes the DD to stereo, and everything still played on the Denon. Now my TV sound for surround stuff regardless of DD or DTS is white noise but my Denon plays everything great, but the sound goes thru the TV.

From my understanding the optical out on the TV is just a passthrough for the sound. The ION must be sending the surround signal in a format my TV does not understand but the Denon does. Its funny though because my TV is 6 months old and the Denon is 8 years old.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I tried the ION on 2 different sony TVs KDL40Z4100 and KDL40W3000 with the same problem. I install Windows XP and setup passthru with MPC and AC3filter and it works just like my desktop machine did with Ubuntu.

Thanks in advance!

I am mainly running XBMC but have tried mplayer. In the BIOS of the machine I tried using internal sound only and internal + external sound; either doesn't make a difference. Here is the output you requested..

Also here is the output of mplayer...

There are a couple errors throws the end of the output but I don't know if thats normal or not. I also use the alsa:device=hdmi and get the same output. Again the sample file plays with static on my TV and perfect on my Denon.

Interesting, I get the same output for aplay -L, showing that I do have HDMI audio yet aplay -l doe snot show device 3 HDMI, only the first two. I do not get ny HDMI output with my Zotac ION board running Intrepid Server. Anyone else have similar problems?

What version of alsa are you running? What do you have in the BIOS for the sound setting? internal only, internal and external, or external only? HDMI is the internal and the spdif and coax outputs are external.

I can get hdmi sound using ubuntu 9.04 server or desktop installs but my tv sound is static but my Denon receiver plays the sound great. I run XBMC using the minimal install and it works great!!

I have the same problem with my Acer Revo ION system. As soon as I want to play DTS sound in video files, I get a loud static white noise. Video files with stereo audio play well without any problems.

I am using the XBMC Live CD and a Samsung 42" LCD panel with HDMI connection to my Acer Revo.

Any ideas? I will post the debug output tomorrow ...

Is the Revo connected directly to the TV?

Can the TV decode DTS sound?
If not then you probably have DTS passthrough enabled.

Hi,

yes - the revo is directly connected to the TV via HDMI.

What do you mean with "DTS passthrough"? Where should I enable/disable it? At the TV or at the XBMC box?

I don't think my TV can decode DTS - but I'm not sure about this :-(

In my case my TV cannot decode DTS but it can decode AC3/DD. In the past using a 9500GT with SBLive using HDMI audio my TV would be silent when playing DTS and downmix the AC3/DD to stereo. Now with my ION board I get static/white noise when playing both DTS or AC3/DD; stereo stuff plays perfect. My Denon AVR plays everything a can throw at it so the signal is good but my TV does not understand it for some reason.

You should disable it at the XBMC box. I have the same situation with my setup with HDMI directly to the TV and optical SPDIF to my surround receiver. With DTS/DD passthrough enabeled in MythTV the TV gives static noise from HD TV channels with DD sound but normal sound on TV channels with stereo sound. Disabling passthrough gives normal sound from the TV also on HD TV channels with DD sound, but then of course I only get stereo from my surround receiver as well.
