Kind of a peculiar question, because very few people in here, if any, are actually coders that would work hands-on with a modern game engine, which frankly is kind of needed to have an informed opinion about something like this.

That said, Id Tech 4 and CryEngine 2. I am still surprised at how well the Doom 3 engine has aged after all these years. Carmack is very, very good.

Thats why he said "favorite" .. he didnt require any technical background to answer the question. Just like when you ask people about their favorite cars.

Cryengine 2

X-Ray Engine (STALKER)
I second the x-ray nomination. Considering that's basically 2003 tech, it is rediculously impressive. On the photorealism scale, I think it nearly matches Crysis, although the later is certainly more technically proficient. Just the art, the design, color and lighting choices, weather; all are very impressive. I'd have to say it is far more immersive an environment in stalker than in crysis. And With Stalker Complete 2009? Fugataboudit

I can't really say much, but if you guys are interested, there's a pretty good comparison on the May Issue of Game Developer magazine.

I'll try and get some scans up at some point.

Seconded!
Fast loading, lots of features, looks very movie-like whatever game uses it. It handles object motion blur perfectly and runs fast doing it as well.

And cryengine 2- DUH!
