Default Extreme Graphic Errors in KDE 4

I'm not sure what caused this but I suddenly got a totally screwed up screen and shortly after I made a screenshot of it the system did not react anymore (not even Ctrl+Alt+F2). However, I could kill the X Server hitting Ctrl+Alt+Backspace a few times. Shortly before this happened I started a Java (Swing) application (tvbrowser). I don't know if that has to do anything with it.

My current system:
Fedora 11: Linux panzi 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Jun 16 23:23:21 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
KDE 4.2.4 (Effects enabled)
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg2.run
GeForce 8800 GT (or is it GTS? how can I find out?)

Apps that where running:
On current Desktop:
Amarok 2.2-SVN
tvbrowser

On other Desktops:
Firefox 3.5
Thunderbird 3
Dolphin
Gkrellm
Kopete
Qwit

What are both nvidia and nouveau driver doing in your system loaded at the same time?

nvidia 10260504 36 - Live 0xffffffffa01d6000 (P)
nouveau 471056 0 - Live 0xffffffffa0047000
drm 206748 1 nouveau, Live 0xffffffffa000f000

Get rid of one of them - the second one preferably, and see what happens :-)

This is most likely the java/kde/nvidia combo problem. Kde says its nvidia's fault, nvidia has given no comment. Many many people and many different programs have been affected by this. Many people report disabling the system tray if the application has one, will let things work fine. You can also mostly recover by changing to a tty and back to x (cntrl+alt+f1, alt+f7). Applications already opened will be screwed up the remainder of their process. Anywho, search around w/ google. Even here this has been reported several times (see jdownloader thread).

Oh, indeed. This doesn't seem to be right. How do I get rid of the nouveau driver?

Edit: sudo rmmod nouveau; sudo yum remove xorg-x11-drv-nouveau

Ok, it definitely has something to do with tvbrowser/Java/Swing. Until now I didn't have used tvbrowser again. And now it seemed to work fine until I swithced the Swing theme (to Plastic) and restarted tvbrowser in order to apply this setting. Again the same graphic errors and behaviour.

I also mention that the nouveau module is loaded again! WTF? I did yum remove it. Why is it her (and loaded!) again? Indeed yum tells me I do not have the xorg-x11-drv-nouveau package installed. How can the nouveau module still be loaded? How do I get rid of it once and for all? (I use Fedora 11. Why does everything (audio and video) get worse with each release of all distributions?)

Edit: I just read in some blog that adding "blacklist nouveau" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf should do the trick. Lets see.

Just in case this is of use I attached a new nvidia-bug-report.log.gz here. However, I created this AFTER I removed the nouveau module (sudo rmmod nouveau). I'm going to restart my system now, because for some reason KDE won't let me enable "desktop effects".

Blacklisting this module did not help. After a reboot it is loaded again! How do I get rid of it? And I still have no composite in KDE. KDE says:
Quote:
Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.

Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type.
WTH? I did not change my X Configuration! I can use 3D (just played Warsow with no problems) and "glxinfo |grep pixmap" finds "GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap". I want to get composite again. After all, I'm living in 2009, don't I?

I did "sudo mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)" (so the blacklisting has an effect) and reinstalled the nvidia driver (because I thought it's worth a try). Funny thing: The nvidia driver setup said that the driver installation was altered since the last nvidia driver installation. But I do not remember a kernel or x11(-driver) update! However, it works again now (and I think I kick tvbrowser for now).

I experience the same issue from time to time, but never use tvbrowser. The only java application I'm aware of I'm using is nepomuk's sesame2 backend. That though doesn't have a ui....
I reported it already a few months ago here http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...ht=Quadro+770M
