Default Strange DVD Drive Problem

I installed a new DVD Burner today and it is acting..strangely.
It seems to work mechanically just fine, and I can open/close the tray, but it refuses to read any media I throw at it - it just sits and "spins".

It is a dvd740 from HP, on Vista.

Could this possibly be related to not having a jumper set in the right spot on the drive? I don't want to crack open the case and fiddle with it unless that could possibly be the problem.

I don't know what else it could be, though. I checked HP's driver downloads and they only have drivers for XP, implying to me that Vista's native drivers should work just fine.

Windows DOES recognize the drive, and it successfully installs the drivers.

There's a firmware update available for that.

Firmware has fixed the few read problems I've had.
