Do you know of any ground-based games that use 3d clouds? Maybe I am missing the point, but unless you are in the air, I don't see this as being a major deal. Although, what would be cool, is to have a dynamic sky where clouds would cast shadows, for example.

Crysis has 3D volumetric clouds and a 2D skybox. WiC has volumetric clouds as well iirc. Lots of FPS use flat but moving skytexture "on top", Stalker for instance incl. a 2D skybox. Oblivion had a pretty good nice sky as well, but again I believe it was 2D.

Static 2D skyboxes are a bit problematic with games that have a day/night cycle, like in Stalker it could have looked a bit odd or static when the game blended from one "sky" to the next (fade-in fade-out style). Rage shouldn't have that problem since it doesn't have a day/night cycle anyway.

that's exactly my point. 2D or 3D it doesn't matter becuase it flat out looks good. stalker and crysis had great skys but I still think that rage's is the best... whether it uses 2D or 3D to accomplish it, it doesn't matter to me.

if it looks good, it looks good.

I think this is appropriate:

You should be able to tell the 3d clouds from the flat sky, regardless, I still consider Vanguard as having the best sky, despite the rest of the graphics

any examples?

I know the whole skydiving scene at the beginning of crysis has 3d clouds you fall through which was cool but that's all I distinctly remember.

Like Zhivago said, if they cast shadows on the landscape, that would be cool.

Can't we all agree the game looks great? I mean, 3D clouds or not it looks freaking great.

Not only that but the volumetric clouds produced sunrays which actually lined up realistically to the cloud shadows on the ground.

Anyway, the recent Rage footage didn't impress me personally very much at all. The old footage looked more impressive to me and while it still looked good, it was nothing great. I might change my opinion once I see fully maxed out PC footage or possibly see it on my own PC running in motion. I surely hope the game will have more gameplay depth than Doom3, which was its biggest issue (IMO).

Anyone else think the trailer looks like a Doom 3 mod? The characters, even the spider robot thing all look Doom 3-ish.
