@zander - Any idea when we will see the issue fixed in the current 190.x releases?

Unfortunately, since I haven't had a chance to implement the workaround yet, I could only speculate. I'll update this thread when I have news to report.

Ok. Thanks for responding though, even if you have nothing to tell I appreciate that. Nice to know we're being listened to

This issue doesn't appear to be fixed in the 185.x series, although the issue has been marked as fix released in Gentoo's bug tracker. Any word on what's going on?

Maybe it is fixed in the 190.25 release? I saw this line in the release notes:
Code:
  • Fixed an initialization problem on some mobile GPUs.
I did not try this release myself yet. Has anyone else succeeded in running this release without patching?

I just tested, and this bug is not fixed yet. However, the patch still works on 190.25.

Could we get some clarification if this is been working on, or has indeed been fixed? After a chat with someone at nvidia, a bug in Gentoo tracking this problem was marked as fix released. Is this problem being worked upon, and if so, has any code relating to it been included in the recent 185 and 190 releases?

If some fix has been attempted, then we need to help you with more debugging.

Up until now, I thought I could not use a ppa (from Launchpad) for driver updates, as I had to apply a patch to the driver.
In this thread on Ubuntu Forums, some people explained how to install the driver from ppa and apply the patch automatically using dkms. This means:

a) if a new kernel is installed, the driver is installed automatically on the new kernel.
b) if a new driver is released, you can execute the script (available in the thread) and restart, and after that the new driver is also patched.

I think this is very convenient, so I thought I share it with you.

I apologize for following up late. Can those of you affected by this problem try the attached patch to ensure it works on your configurations? The patch should also apply on driver versions other than 190.36.

Works here! (I applied it using the dkms system, and not by hand. Shouldn't make a difference.)
