passing from Xorg 1.3.0 to Xorg 1.4.2 (upgrade from slamd64 12.0 to 12.2)
xvideo does not work properly anymore: a) brightness/contrast/saturation controls disappered b) most of the times is impossible to resize video with xv because of BadAlloc error (any media player) I'm using dual head with no Xinerama in both configurations in the latest config I'm using compiz, and it's very slow to map windows (a couple of seconds) but seems to wok that's really annoying cause the old version worked perfectly any idea? |

Xorg server 1.4 enabled Composite by default, which causes the driver to disable the video overlay Xv adaptor. The remaining adaptors don't support the color controls. Also, you can get BadAlloc errors if you're trying to play video to a redirected window and the driver cannot ensure that your window is in video memory. I would recommend disabling the Composite extension.

hi, thanks for the quick reply.
I tried disabling Composite and: - compiz refuses to start (normal?) - badAlloc errors are gone, sadly where the motion pictures should be all I can see is a gray wall - now brightness control is back, but is good only to change gray from/to dark/bright etc also I'm not sure what you mean with redirected window, it's about using composite extension? I can live without compiz, but I really need XV on this old machine. earlier I failed to mention that the card I'm using is a GeForce 6800 |

Yes, Compiz requires the Composite extension and will fail if it's disabled. The range of the color control attributes changed at some point to work around persistent problems with certain video players, so you may need to hit some sort of "reset to defaults" button in your video player. It's odd that that changed when you disabled Composite, though. Can you attach a screenshot of the problem, the output of the 'xvinfo' program, and a bug report log please.

WARN:
maybe I was not clear, the two first of the two pictures below is the video without xv (x11 driver for mplayer) the second with xv. in the second case I can't get the colors right whatsoever, the picture is the best I could get. playing with control more I realize that in fact picture appear when I lower the contrast to less than, say, 40-45% if I raise it again it goes black of a different tone of gray each time in fact the picture seems about black and white but playing with controls again I can see there's actually color but controls are not effective enough to let get to real color even with top-of-the-scale values, the same is true for brightness, image is very dark even with top brightness so, the real problem seem to be controls are utterly bad biased I could not get a screenshot cause xv does not appear in normal program shots, so I took a pict with a camera I also attached X log and xvinfo output Last edited by nebokazer; 07-27-09 at 07:24 AM. |
