I haven't done extensive testing but as far as I can tell, a certain type of tearing in videos seems to happen or get exacerbated when you use too many reference frames in h.264 encoding. Maybe also dependent on the hardware not being fast enough? While being watched full screen on hdtv dimensions, I can observe some steady tearing near the top in dvd sized movies I ripped into avc1 with high number of reference frame (and perhaps also b-frames) encoding. I compare to videos ripped with 3 reference frames and it doesn't nearly as much, if at all. The video card is I think a value card and hardly the best (9600 GSO), but could a faster one overcome this or no? Any idea?

So nobody knows about frame references and b-frames and how it relates to vdpau performance?

I know about that; I don't see much difference in anything.
Also I find it strange that 1080p videos are smooth while some dvd rips in h.264 (with high frame refs) stutter a bit and suffer the tearing, so it could be just the implementation, not a hardware speed issue, or it could be something totally unrelated, but then again what do I know; apparently the same as others. |
