Loving Everything Me
|
So, I was a big supporter of Steam. I have like 150 games on the service. Recently though, as I have mentioned, a friend of mine lost his account, and though he did just get it back, it scared me that it was so easy to lose.
For the past few weeks I have been buying retail, and honestly it is a pain in the rear. Most stores don't stock PC games that much anymore, so I have to check 10 different stores to find the game, and they almost never have them on release day. Steam has Red Faction 3, Batman Arkham Asylum and Resident Evil 5 up for preorder right now, all for release Tuesday. I want them all... who knows when I will find them in a store, plus these preorders have bonuses. Still, I cannot click the buy button for some reason. Help me make a decision.

Wow, I hate Crysis for making me always misspell the word now.

haha crysis is bigger than the english language!
I have heaps of games on steam, if you have a good password (random chars 8+) and use common sense (don't accept gifts from unknowns) and don't cheat and don't go to phishing sites you should be alright for good. Steam is the win do not fight it! How did he lose his account anyway?

I buy steam because if it isn't at WalMart I have to drive at least 30 miles to get it.

I have a Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target and three Gamestops all around me. Problem is, they never get the games on release, or even at all.
Gamestop only gets new PC games if you preorder. For whatever odd reason, they don't allow you to preorder everything either, they told me "no" to Risen and Dragon Age. Best Buy gets everything eventually, but it takes days after release. Target never gets much of anything. Wal-Mart puts stuff out on release, but they only carry the biggest and best titles like Sims 3 and such.

Their shipping is slow as hell, plus it ships on release day, not arrives on release day. Plus, shipping plus tax means I am paying $10 more, or more, depending on the game. For instance RE5 is $45 on Steam... on gogamer, with tax and shipping, it could easily hit $60.

To be honest, while it really was unfortunate that your friends account was disabled for a period of time, you do have to cut Steam some slack as they have hundreds of thousands or millions of accounts with loads of games etc... they probably have failsafes setup and, just like our antivirus sometimes flag false positives, so could Valve's monitoring software or even the people doing the work. For me, the fact that he got his account back says everything... had he not got it back, then that would be something worth fighting against. I've given up on retail... I was disappointed that Wolfenstein didn't come to Steam, so I honestly made a decent effort to find it retail and it just wasn't available. I don't mind Amazon, but I'm also environmentally conscious and the added packaging (not to mention the retail game box and DVD itself) all seems so wasteful. I'm with nutcrackr on this one... protect your account, don't do anything risky, and you really have nothing to worry about. If the convenience and ease is worth it to you, go back to Steam. If you think that the gasoline, time, effort, and irritation of going retail is meaningful to you because you're making a stand, then go with it. As I've said before, it doesn't matter how you buy your games as long as you buy them ![]()
