Default is bitstreaming HD audio possible on Linux

Ignoring the copy protected audio, is it possible to bitstream unprotected truehd via HDMI using some ( any ) Nvidia card under Linux? Is this a software issue or a hardware issue? I have seen comments from the ffmpeg group stating this should work, and others insisting not all trueHD is protected, if I had some trueHD that was not protected could it be bitstreamed to a trueHD compatible amplifier using an Nvidia card under Linux using mplayer? Can it be done in any way w/ NV hardware? Is this a software or a hardware issue? Can someone please explain why ac3 or DTS can be bitstreamed via HDMI, but not trueHD or DTS-MA? What is broken?
