Default 4496 problem compiling nvgart RH9

With a custom RH9 kernel, I have trouble compiling and using the nvgart module.
Soltek SL-75FRN2-L Athlon XP2200+
Riva TNT2 Model 64 32Mb

The documentation about patching the kernel is inaccurate - if followed literally, it will fail. It assumes that the patch is installed in the root of the source tree, which it is not.

- Change to the Linux kernel source directory.

Example: cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.20

- Patch the kernel. Watch out for any warnings or errors.

patch -p1 < linux-2.4.20-agpgart.diff

Once that is fixed, an attempt to compile fails until the following change is made to agpgart_be.c

4347c4347
< /* agp_bridge.num_of_masks = 1; */
---
> agp_bridge.num_of_masks = 1;

That is, the reference to agp_bridge.num_of_masks must be commented out. It then compiles.

When I try to run X (gdm), I see the NVIDIA splash, and the hourglass cursor on a ablack screen. That's it. THe system hangs there. The hourglass does not spin, and the screen remains black. THe cursor cannot be moved,and Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesn't work. Neither, I think, does Ctrl-Alt-BS. THere are no complaints in the XFree86 log.

I will try with the unpatched agpgart module.

Default

I have reverted the nvgart module, restoring the original source and header files which were changed by the patch, and re-installed using the standard agpgart module. No problems using 0261 graphics. Note that this is a cross-forum problem - the effect of compiling the 0261 nvgart module on the running of the 4496 graphics drivers.
