Default AMD64 problems with dual opteron system - 1.0-4499

Hi, I just got a dual opteron 240 box w/ 2 gigs of ram. It's currently running gentoo(2.4.21) and I took it upon myself to get the nvidia drivers(4499 series) working. It has a GeForce FX 5200 in it(for some reason it shows 2 PCI device listings ?) but I can't get the nvidia driver to work without crashing X. I startx and the screen will show the nvidia logo, but X then starts to consume 99% of the CPU time and just sit there. Also, quitting X does not appear to 'refresh' the display, as whatever was on there at the time of X being killed remains on screen. As requested on the bugs thread here is my information:

Card: GeForce FX 5200
driver: 1.0-4499(AMD64 driver)
distro: Gentoo

video biso info:
Model: GeForce FX 5200
IRQ: 16
Video BIOS: 04.34.20.18.00
Card Type: AGP

processor info:
cpu family : 15
model : 5
model name : AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 240

motherboard model: tyan S2885

X seems to work 'fine' with the X bundled driver. i.e. it doesn't crash and i can load my desktop enviorment.

I have a similar setup at work, only running LinuxBIOS If I can get VGA working any time soon, I'll let you know if I can also get X running.

Sorry I can't get more specific at the moment, but since you have a rather unique setup I thought I'd try to provide some hope until either I test the system or someone else who has comes along and can help.

Default I seem to have X working

The problem appears to be AGP related. The nvidia driver and the kernel driver for the K8 AMD-8151 do not seem to work at all in 2.4.21. I have been told 2.4.23-pre6 has a grip of amd64 patches merged, so today when I get some time I'm going to try that out, and hopefully AGP should work kernel side. Note that the chipset config is not in menu config(for whatever reason) but the option is lying around if you edit your config file.

The kernel AGP K8 driver doesn't work (even in -pre6) - if you disable agpgart in the kernel and just let the nvidia driver handle it you'll get somewhere.

It's only really useful for 2d stuff though, unless you already have a pile of 64bit 3d games available (and if you have where did you get them....)
