Default release schedule

is there any news around on when the next nvidia driver is supposed to be released, i think it's time for a performance update to it. especially in 2d performance. 2d performance in linux is AGES behind windows, and that really sucks

But how much is caused by the driver as released by nVidia?
Do you have examples of other XFree86 drivers that perform significantly faster on similarly-priced similarly-aged video cards?
If not, it may well be that most of the speed is limited by XFree86 and the X11 architecture.
