Default 190.42 Overscan Correction Fails @ 1080i

Using a Sony KV-HR32M61 CRT HD TV @ 720p the overscan slider works fine and one can dynamically adjust the overscan correction.

So long as /dev/sda1 is not filled to 100% the values seem to come through on reboot ok.

Same kit, changing to 1080i in xorg.conf the slider no longer seems to work at all, the 720p overscan slider values come through but there is no dynamic adjustment nor any overscan correction, even on reboot. The TV also displays 1080i, all be it overscanned.

Where is the problem here?
