Default 195.22: Better fullscreen Theora decoding in Firefox 3.6+

I don't know how or why, but my laptop with a GeForce 7000m is suddenly capable of showing fullscreen theora video in Firefox 3.6 without skipping. After some testing, I've confirmed that this is something to do with the 195.22 drivers, as 190.42 still performs poorly.

So that's cool.

I can't believe I'm seeing all of these threads about how well the drivers are working. Usually it's the complete opposite...

Hmm...*goes off to grab the new drivers*

195.22 didn't work here.

tested the beta driver
- platform ASUS P5N7A-VM (GeForce 9300, nForce 730i)
- mythbuntu 9.10. kernel 2.6.31.x-386 (packaged kernel)
- Technisat CableStar HD2 DVB-C tuner card
- 4GB RAM, GPU using 0.5 GB
- Core 2 Duo Conroe E2140, 2 x 1.6 GHz, overclocked at 2.1 GHz

works beautiful
HD TV stuff with mythtv 0.22 is smooth with vdpau (using normal deinterlacer, not advanced but that did not seem to matter), CPU remains at ~ 5 %.

mplayer works fine too, CPU ~ 2/3 %

so far so good

I have issues with resuming from S3 though but it's not nvidia related (mobo stuff).

I have not tested sound through HDMI though. Should do it at some point.

Just tested this beta driver - it's wonderful. Now VLC with vaapi enabled (vdpau backend) is able to play HD TV broadcast of Hong Kong. There was much flickering prior to this version. CPU usage is a bit high though, since VLC/vaapi has only h264 decoding via vdpau, but not rendering (yet). mplayer marginally works with this and older drivers, but it has no dvb subtitle support.

Something must be right with this release. Less overhead in task-swithing between Video/CUDA. The sluggish Gnome Desktop gets some of its lost reputation back, points finger and blames Nvidia

And no more "funny" rainbow colored pixel droppings on the console when launching CUDA ... And it works in the high resolution VESA modes as well ... with no overhead when switching between consoles ... even if fbtv happens to be running there?

This is great! Goodbye vga16fb!

KDE4 4.3.3 + kwin effects runs a little snappier than it used to.

Thanks nVidia!

All that's left that's bothering me is warsow 0.5 running very slow if I don't use gl_ext_texture_compression.

Just an 8400m gs 128mb vram.

My celebration turns out to be a bit too early. It was found that the vdpau backend driver for vaapi didn't work with 195.22. As a result vlc ran without vdpau, but together with a coincidence that I recently upgraded my AMD CPU from X2 4800+ to X2 250, vlc s/w decode on the HD materials is producing a flawless result (despite a 5x% cpu usage). I found there's a vdpau backend for vaapi driver update just 1 day ago, and it works fine with 195.22. However there's still some flickering when vlc plays with vaapi/vdpau.

Anyway nvidia is doing a good work for a driver version that receives so many good comments. Keep going!
