When you look in Device Manager, is it showing the FX drivers, or is it showing MS drivers?

You can go into safe mode and uninstall the drivers too....

It shows the FX drivers. The mic is muted under both the win applet and the FX applet in the control panel.

I think I'm one of the unfortunate ones that's having the game issue DD. The only time I can hear myself is in-game, no PTT functionality.

This sucks.

What about your other games? Do you have that problems in other games?

Both L4Ds are the only games I use a mic in. It worked fine in GoW on Vista though.

The main reason I'm blaming steam is that it works after a fresh format and steam install, as it's supposed to, then just stops. Then I have to jump through hoops to even get a hot mic back, but the PTT is still a no go.

Yep, that's what it is. Wasn't bad in game just now, but sometimes the feedback is horrible.
