Default Blank screen on start, Nvidia ION - Acer Aspire Revo

Hi all,

I just bought an Acer Aspire Revo, powered with a Nvidia ION.
After a clean installation of linux I tried to install the accelerated drivers. Installation goes apparently flawlessly, but after that gdm won't start: I only see a blank screen. No mouse no background, nothing.

I have tried several linux distros (Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, XBMC live, GeekBox), different kernels (with and without upgrading the one included with the distro) and different versions of the drivers (173, 180 and 185 as provided by Ubuntu, 190 and 195 as downloaded from the website), the result is always the same. Only GeekBox throws some cryptic "Can't open display" without any further information.

Neither /var/log/nvidia-installer.log not /var/log/Xorg.0.log show any errors, and the xorg.conf generated by the installer looks minimalistic and normal.

Any ideas on what might be going on?

Please see the forum sticky posts about how to report a problem, including how to generate a bug report log file.

That's odd. You're right, the log files show everything working correctly. If you log in at the console and then run 'startx', do you seen anything on the screen? How is your monitor connected to the GPU? Also, I see a message in your kernel log about usplash -- does disabling usplash at boot help?

No changes at all if I start from the console and then fire up the xserver. The screen just changes the video mode from 720p to 1080p and then goes pitch black.
My display is a HDTV plugged to the Revo box through HDMI. If I remove/rename the xorg.conf file created by nvidia-xconfig, then I can enter the desktop (using the default VESA drivers). Will try now disabling usplash and report if it changes anything.

Cheers
J

After disabling usplash at boottime there were no changes with the updated kernel 2.6.31-16, however, doing the same with the original kernel 2.5.31-14, the xserver fires up with a complain that it can only start in low graphics mode. The log (attached) now shows a "no screens found" message.

Cheers
