Default Periodic short freezes; 9600GT; 190.42; "NVIDIA WAIT"

I'm running Karmic Koala Ubuntu with a 9600GT and the latest drivers as of this writing, 190.42.
Every so often I get a short freeze, usually while watching flash videos. The screen will first freeze, but the mouse cursor still moves, and a few seconds later the audio stops too. After 5-10 seconds it returns to normal. It is quite infuriating, and can occur as often as once a minute. Sometimes though, hours can pass without a freeze.

The stalls are always accompanied by "NVIDIA WAIT" messages, similar to the following:
Quote:
(WW) Dec 14 18:59:33 NVIDIA(0): WAIT (0, 6, 0x8000, 0x0000d6bc, 0x0000d6bc)
Disabling the NVIDIA drivers gets rid of the problem. I have tried the following:
pci=nommconf
idle=poll
maxcpus=1
UseEvents (not present in xorg.conf to start with)
Motherboard BIOS update
HPET

Nothing has worked so far. Any suggestions?

I just upgraded to version 190.53 of the drivers, and I have gotten one WAIT error so far. Time will tell if these drivers have improved the situation, but they definitely have not completely fixed it.

I'd love to hear any ideas people have!

EDIT: I tried Compiz but it fairly quickly stalled my system, it's unusable.

Is it maybe worth getting the rc 2.6.33 kernel and the 195.22 beta drivers?

It would appear that my hardware was faulty. I replaced the 9600GT with an 8800GTS, and everything is fine now. I have sent the card back under warranty, hopefully they don't screw me over.

My suggestion to people who get similar problems is to try all the things I tried, then substitute a similar card, or put the faulty card in another machine, confirm it's bad, and send it back.
