I used WinHex on my cousins CF card to recover some deleted pictures. That did fine although its a complicated app (used for forensics).
R-Studio NTFS is a very good utility for recovering deleted files. But, most of all, I prefer "Recover My Files". Despite the tacky name, it recovered almost everything on my g/f's deleted, formatted, and partially overwritten HD. It can find the MFT as well as compensate for fragmented files most of the time. And its quite easy to use. That scored points with me

I have recovered over 30 gb of data after formating and repartioning with Advanced File Recovery. I got quite decent results.
