Default Ubuntu 9.10 + NVIDIA 190.53 + 7600 GS = No X

Hi,

I tried first to install the Ubuntu 185.18.36 drivers, and then un-installed those and installed the NVIDIA binary driver 190.53 directly from nVidia. Both drivers seem to exhibit the same problem, but I will describe the 190.53 problem below.

I have trouble with the screen flashing text mode repeatedly (text -> black -> text ...) if I use the standard boot option. Using the recovery option instead, I can control what is going on. If I log in and then do startx, I can investigate... There seems to be a problem in /var/log/messages with the nvidia/NVRM module: RmInitAdapter failed!

Please find my nvidia-bug-report.log.gz attached. It seems to describe the problem more completely than I can.

The nv driver works on this machine, and luckily all I have to do to use it is move/remove the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
