Question Dell Inspiron C840 laptop screen resolution problem

I've got an Inspiron C840 with a screen res problem that started after the main board was replaced (for a serial port failure). I do not believe it has anything to do with the well-documented NVidia-APM problems.

On cold startup into runlevel 5 (X), the entire screen is "shrunk" to aproximately 3/4 of its proper size. A black "letterbox" (about 1-1/2") appears around all sides. The aspect ratio is correct.

The only way I've found to work around this is to simply enter bios setup first (before linux boots) and immediately exit (note: I'm not modifying any setttings). After that, everything works fine.

I've upgraded to the newest version of the NVidia driver. Windows 2K does not have this problem.

XF86Config-4 is attached. Anyone have any ideas about what is going on?

i would've said fix the monitor options - but Win2k doesn't have these problems - sorry
