Default Re: Mplayer+vdpau+composite = screen corruption

Dear nvidia developers, I have a somewhat different setup but seem to be hitting the same issue as well when running mplayer with vdpau option. I followed many of the suggestions given earlier in the thread but still no luck. No video when running mplayer with vdpau option.

$ strace -eopen ./mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau /home/rp/clips/The\ Simpsons\ Movie\ -\ Trailer.mp4 |& logfile_novideo.log

Do not see video but audio works. Specific error is:
...
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_device_create_x11: 1
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

...

you can see attached logfile_novideo.log for the strace output.

My machine setup:
Using Geforce GT210 card.
Ubuntu 9.10 using nvidia's 190.53 linux driver, installed nvidia's libvdpau

$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 190.53 Tue Dec 8 18:51:41 PST 2009
GCC version: gcc version 4.4.1 (Ubuntu 4.4.1-4ubuntu9)

Installed mplayer/libvdpau using the instructions in the README from nvidia website (ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/vdpau/, used the mplayer-vdpau-4789364 version)

$ strings -a /usr/lib/libvdpau.so|grep 'nvidia id'
nvidia id: NVIDIA VDPAU Wrapper Shared Library 190.53 Tue Dec 8 20:49:23 PST 2009

I checked the symlink for libvdpau.so that was discussed above and surprisingly the link is present.

$ ls -l /usr/lib/*vdpau*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 2010-01-22 23:03 /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so -> libvdpau_nvidia.so.190.53
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 2010-01-22 22:48 /usr/lib/libvdpau.so -> libvdpau.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 2010-01-22 22:48 /usr/lib/libvdpau.so.1 -> libvdpau.so.190.53

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3624 2010-01-22 22:48 /usr/lib/libvdpau.so.190.53
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 2010-01-22 22:48 /usr/lib/libvdpau_trace.so -> vdpau/libvdpau_trace.so.190.53

/usr/lib/vdpau:
total 1496
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 2010-01-22 22:48 libvdpau_nvidia.so.1 -> libvdpau_nvidia.so.190.53
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1474604 2010-01-22 22:48 libvdpau_nvidia.so.190.53
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2010-01-22 22:48 libvdpau_trace.so.1 -> libvdpau_trace.so.190.53
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 50332 2010-01-22 22:48 libvdpau_trace.so.190.53

The clip is a H.264 test clip. You can download it from here.
http://www.dvdloc8.com/clip.php?movieid=12167&clipid=1

Am I missing something in my setup?

I tried connecting the hdmi output to my panasonic plasma and very impressed with the picture quality. Iam very keen on getting the mplayer setup with the hardware acceleration for decode working.

My .mplayer/config is empty. Do I need to do anything here?

I also tried running mplayer without the vdpau option and Iam able to see video/audio just that the CPU is really cranking to decode it.

$ ./mplayer -vc ffh264 /home/rp/clips/The\ Simpsons\ Movie\ -\ Trailer.mp4

The following is wrong:

/usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so -> libvdpau_nvidia.so.190.53

It should point at:

vdpau/libvdpau_nvidia.so.190.53

I changed the link, however it didn't help much.

$ ls -l /usr/lib/*vdpau*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 2010-01-25 22:38 /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so -> vdpau/libvdpau_nvidia.so.190.53
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 2010-01-22 22:48 /usr/lib/libvdpau.so -> libvdpau.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 2010-01-22 22:48 /usr/lib/libvdpau.so.1 -> libvdpau.so.190.53
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3624 2010-01-22 22:48 /usr/lib/libvdpau.so.190.53
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 2010-01-22 22:48 /usr/lib/libvdpau_trace.so -> vdpau/libvdpau_trace.so.190.53

/usr/lib/vdpau:
total 1496
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 2010-01-22 22:48 libvdpau_nvidia.so.1 -> libvdpau_nvidia.so.190.53
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1474604 2010-01-22 22:48 libvdpau_nvidia.so.190.53
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2010-01-22 22:48 libvdpau_trace.so.1 -> libvdpau_trace.so.190.53
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 50332 2010-01-22 22:48 libvdpau_trace.so.190.53

Specific error I get when running mplayer is:
...
open("/usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so", O_RDONLY) = 5
Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_device_create_x11: 1
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.
...

my command line:
$strace -eopen ./mplayer -vc ffh264vdpau -vo vdpau /home/rp/clips/The\ Simpsons\ Movie\ -\ Trailer.mp4

attaching the strace log file. Let me know anything else Iam missing.

I think this is unrelated. Anywas there is one another change I did, added the following lines to ~/.mplayer/config file.

############
#Display
#subtitle code
#Truetype fonts rock! (sudo apt-get msttcorefonts)
font=/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/impact.ttf

ffactor="10" #black outline
sub-bg-alpha="0" #background color ala closed captions
sub-bg-color="0" #black to white
subfont-text-scale="3.7" #truetype font scaling
subfont-blur="1" #Slight blur

#always keep mplayer on top
ontop="1"

#turns off xscreen saver...maybe
stop-xscreensaver="yes"

It looks like you driver is badly installed in general. I suggest uninstalling the driver completely using any and all methods that you used to install it. Then, re-install it using a single method.

Hi, I did encounter lot of no-screen events while installing the nvidia driver and got it after a few tries.

Iam fairly new to installing linux drivers. Can you give me specific commands on how to uninstall, what to check to make sure uninstall completed properly.

What should I look for, to make sure the nvidia driver install happened cleanly? Any specific links that I should check are present (or not present)?

Will be great if you can point me to a howto/tutorial that works for 190.53 version of driver/ubuntu 9.10.

Overall ,does this sequence look right? Uninstall mplayer, uninstall graphics driver. Reinstall graphics driver, then mplayer/vdpau, then try playing the clip.

If you installed the driver using NVIDIA's .run package, simply re-run the package with the "--uninstall" option. After this has succeeded (and only after it has succeeded, and after all other uninstall methods, and after you've verified with the ls command I mention below), you may want to "rm -rf /var/lib/nvidia" to clean up any previous installer state.

If you installed the driver using a distribution package manager, you'll have to uninstall it using that package manager. The mechanism varies per distribution. You may need to seek help from a distribution-specific forum for this. Please ensure you remove both the installed files and any "hook" scripts that automatically re-install it every time you boot your system.

Please also uninstall using any other mechanism(s) you may have used to install it.

If you attempted to install using multiple methods, please attempt to uninstall it using all of them.

After the above, please verify that no VDPAU files are installed; the "ls" command I gave earlier should list no files.

After that, then attempt to re-install the driver using a single method.

If you're still having problems after that, I'd suggest starting a new post with a specific title indicating that you're having installation problems; that way, you're more likely to get help from a wider variety of people.

Thanks Stephen. Cleaning up and reinstalling the drivers helped. It looks like somehow the various install methods were stepping on each other.

Iam able to run mplayer with the HW acceleration. Tried to run a 1080p H.264 video clip with the CPU using less than 10%, nice and impressive.
