Default Problem installing 1.0-4496 on SuSE 8.2

After installing NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run, I encounter the following error messages when trying to start X:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

The devices /dev/nvidia* exist and have permissions crw-rw-rw-, owner root:root. When trying modprobe nvidia, there are no error messages.

Video card: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 400
Linux distribution: SuSE 8.2
Processor: Intel Pentium III (Coppermine), 933MHz

Can you load the module manually with
modprobe nvidia?

Best regards,

modprobe nividia gives the following message:
Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - NVIDIA
See http://www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted for information about tainted modules
Module nvidia loaded, with warnings

lsmod shows:
Module Size Used by Tainted: P
nvidia 1630720 0 (unused)

Then I tried startx, but the result was the same as before.

I believe the SaX created config you're using is slightly in error, but this may be only cosmedic and not actually fix the problem.

the Sections should be arranged as:

Code:
Section "Device"
Section "Screen"
Section "ServerLayout"
Yours currently has the "Device" section following the "Screen", the screen references the device, and I'm not sure whether XFree86 config can take multiple pass defs like this.

I have changed the order of sections in XF86Config, but it didn't help.
