Default GeForce 310M vs. Vaio vs. Linux Fedora

Hi,

I'm trying to configure my Vaio VPCCW21FX (Nvidia Geforce 310M) to use Fedora 12, but when I install the drivers and start X, I get blank screen (screen off).

Anyone can help me?

Thanks,
Jonas

Hello and welcome to the forums.
Please read the sticky on how to report bugs, as the information you provide is probably not sufficient to solve the problem.

You should be able to switch to a VT with CTRL+ALT+F1, log in, create the bug report asked and upload it to an external media, then post it to this forum.

Kind regards,

Fuchs

Hi, thanks for the report, several things I noticed:

1) According to ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...rtedchips.html it might be that your GPU is unfortunately not supported yet by the Linux driver. Is this a rather new GPU?

2) You seem to have compiled the driver by hand. This is something I do not recommend at all. Please refer to the "how to install ... on recent distributions" thread or the fedora documentation on how to install the driver properly with the package management.

3) Currently you seem to be using the general "vesa" driver. Do you have a graphical environment that way, or is the black screen error currently showing? If not: could you please try to switch from "vesa" to "nvidia" in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and create a bug report with this configuration, after restarting X? (You might have to switch to a VT as described in my first post)

Kind regards,

Fuchs

All wrong again, sorry.

I updated Kernel, and installed the NVIDIA drivers from RPM Fusion:
kmod-nvidia-2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64-190.53-1.fc12.4.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-190.53-1.fc12.x86_64

Now I have a new problem: when I start X, only the external display works, because the Notebook display isn't recognized.

I think you're experiencing an issue similiar to this one: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...highlight=VAIO and the solution provided in that thread (custom EDID) should fix it.

It works, thank you!

Now I go to the second round: configure X to work with both screens, external TV, etc.

Glad it helped.
You should be able to get that kind of setup this via nvidia-settings :-)

The problem in log 1 was related to the nouveau driver which you have failed to blacklist.
Remove the nomodeset option from grub.conf and replace with rdblacklist=nouveau
