Stephen, are you hoping this will also fix the KT333 motherboards? If so I'll see if I can resurrect mine?

Dragorep,

* The modified driver will definitely only affect "VDPAU feature set A" GPUs.
* The modified driver only affects MPEG-1/2 decode, not H.264 or VC-1/WMV.
* The modified driver is unlikely to solve *all* the problems of the KT333 motherboard, even for MPEG-1/2; cehoyos pointed out that he sees display pre-emption on KT333 even when using SW decode and VDPAU just for display.

However, if you're using such a GPU and decoding MPEG-1/2, it would be quite interesting if you could test it; perhaps the frequency of problems will be reduced?.

Sorry Stephen, I'm in the H264 pre-emption camp.

Fantastic.

Followed the steps in post 41 and everything seems to be working fine. Thank you very much for the update !

Just a couple of questions:

1. Installing the driver seems to have removed the nvidia configuration tool. Is this normal ? How can I get it back ?
2. Ubuntu's hardware driver tool doesn't show the new driver. Normal ?
3. Where can I see which driver is being used ?

I'm using Mythbuntu 9.04, Asus M2N68-VM mobo, 9400GT card

You mean installing from the .run removed it, or copying over the updated libvdpau_nvidia.so? Perhaps the .run's desktop integration isn't working properly for you. You should still be able to access the tool by running "nvidia-settings" from an X-based command prompt.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with that tool.

nvidia-settings will show you, or just "ls -l /usr/lib/libGL* and the version number is in the filename, at least for current/recent releases.

That did the trick and confirmed that I'm using 195.36.03

Does the latest 195.36.08 contain our fix?

No, this fix is not in any regular driver release. We're still trying to fully investigate the root-cause of the issue; we're wary of simply enabling that workaround without fully understanding it, since it might not actually be a complete fix. I'll post here if/when we do include either a WAR or a fix in a driver release.

Couple of observations I made while using the 195.36.03 beta driver:

1. Whenever I switch channels I get random black blocks all over the picture. This only lasts for a less than a second, then the picture "settles" and everything is fine

2. Every once in a while I get some distortion. This is in the form of a multicoloured horizontal thick line across the picture. Seems like it only happens during liveTV and recordings (mpeg2 in other words). I haven't yet tested if I can reproduce this by skipping back and replaying the same sequence. I'll try that and report back here.

BTW: I'm running mythTV 0.22 on a mythbuntu 9.10 system, 9400GT card.

Cheers.

can you post a fix against 195.36.08, 64-bit? .03 has been removed from some of the repos already.

NVIDIA is currently recommending that 195.36.08 not be used; please see the announcement in this forum.

At this point, I don't intend patching any further driver releases. We plan to incorporate this WAR into a future driver release while we fully investigate the problem. The release data for such a driver isn't something I can publicly discuss right now.

Has this fix been incorporated into any later driver versions ?
