Only problem is that doesn't actually change the backlight intensity, it changes the color curve; the backlight is still going full blast but the LCD is trying to fight it. Not too good if you're trying to extend your battery life for instance!

Unfortunately no joy...

For those trying to test, one of the most consistent ways I've found to trigger the bug is to do a lot of web browsing - the redraw of the whole screen often seems to be a good trigger, ie when going to a fresh page. Essentially anything that causes a lot of drawing events seems to "help"

I just experienced this crash. I was running a stress test script (attached) that opened a browser window every 10 seconds for about 30-45 minutes. At this time, xscreensaver was also running, and at the time of the crash, "pinion" (the screensaver with large spinning gears) was playing. HPET is already disabled.

After the crash, the pinion process continued to use 100% CPU and would not respond to kill -9, even from root. But the rest of the system (the non-graphical parts) seem to work. The nvidia-log generation took a few minutes--I don't know whether that's normal.

Just curious: Did anyone test drive a Fedora snapshot with nouveau and Gallium3D on the W510?

As stated before, I also get a frozen X after some time. Massive webbrowsing or other window activitiy seems to increase the probability of freezing. Just like d3mia7, I get the same strange messages in Xorg.0.log:
(WW) Feb 20 20:13:22 NVIDIA(0): WAIT (0, 6, 0x8000, 0x00003a3c, 0x00003a3c)
(WW) Feb 20 20:13:25 NVIDIA(0): WAIT (0, 6, 0x8000, 0x00003f7c, 0x00003f7c)
(WW) Feb 20 20:13:28 NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x00004214, 0x00008eac)
(WW) Feb 20 20:13:35 NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0x00004214, 0x00008eac)
(WW) Feb 20 20:13:38 NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x00004214, 0x0000d15c)
(WW) Feb 20 20:13:45 NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0x00004214, 0x0000d15c)

I observed something interesting: when trying to log in after freezing via ssh from a second machine, X on the W510 gets back to being reponsive again and continues to work. Strange!

If that is reproducable, it might be a first workaround to do a automated ssh login by cron every minute.

Follow up: the recovery by logging in via ssh seemed to be a random based. I did not observe this a second time.

When logging in via ssh in the frozen W510, I'll see one CPU running at 100% utilization by process /usr/bin/X.

I got the freeze again, and this time my log file has a nice stack trace (I don't know whether it'll be useful, though).

Well, glad I'm not alone anyhow... My W510 has been re-windowed for the moment.

Just FYI, the latest Ubuntu alphas with the 'nouveau' driver have working 2D with full resolution, and seems quite stable. No 3D though (ie no Compiz).

None so far. Reverted to the 185 Nvidia release, the one included in Ubuntu Karmic. I tried to use Karmic and the latest nouveau drivers (see http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/UbuntuPackages) without success.

I also tried Lucid with nouveau. Works so far, X seems stable, but suspend/resume also only works once. But Lucid is currently for some other reason (nothing to do with NVidia) no option for me.

Does anyone run Karmic with nouveau?

Yeah, for me the 185 drivers are no good due to the blurry screen problem after console switches or logout/login...

Lucid with Nouveau has been the most useful for me thus far - with that combination I at least have working brightness controls although it is slooooowwwwww..... Kinda wish I'd gotten something with an Intel card instead, they at least ensure that there's drivers for their hardware at release time!

I never got nouveau working on Karmic at all - not really sure what the issue was but no-go.

I'm guessing most of the rest of you with this card are also running on Lenovo W510's? If so have any of you had sound issues?

Has anybody else tried the new stable driver, 195.36.08? I haven't yet managed to cause a crash with a night of xscreensaver and an hour of web browing stress-test with one tab opened per second. (I won't really feel sure that this is fixed until I leave my computer on for a week with no crash.)
