Unhappy [195.36.08]Freeze with dual cards 8800GTS and 8500GT

Hello,

I have just installed the 195.36.08 and have a major issue with it as my system completely freeze when I load the nvidia module.

I have two nvidia graphic card in my pc, a MSI NX8800GTS-T2D640 and a MSI NX8500GT-MTD256EH/D2, not in SLI.
My 8800GTS is connected to my two screen and have twinview enabled, the 8500GT is connected to my LCD screen with HDMI.

I have to remove the second card to be able to boot.
I've attached the nvidia-bug-report.log but the content is not very relevant as only one card is plugged, neverless I hope this is enough to repoduce the bug. I'm on Archlinux.

Thx,
Alex

When you say the system freezes at boot, do you mean that it freezes when you try to start the X server, or does it not even POST? Please check to see if your motherboard vendor has an updated SBIOS. If the problem still occurs, please cause the freeze, then reboot and run nvidia-bug-report.sh before starting X again. Nothing in your log file indicates a problem -- everything looks like it's working correctly.

It freeze when initscript load the module "nvidia", it's not hard because it's running fine with windows XP and it's before X starts.

I will try to blacklist the nvidia module on loading, plug the second card and generate a log report.

I replug my second card, blacklist the nvidia module and generate a new nvidia-bug-report.log

I tried to load nvidia module with 'modprobe nvidia' and the pc completely freeze instantly, even remote access with ssh.

Thank you. There's nothing obviously wrong in your bug report. It's very strange that just loading the module causes the freeze, since the driver does very little at modprobe time. Do you have any scripts set to run when the nvidia module is loaded? Please run "modprobe -v -n nvidia" to do a dry run to see what modprobe is doing. It would also be very helpful if you could set up a serial console to see if the kernel is printing anything helpful before it freezes. There are various guides floating around on the web on how to do that.

Here is the result :
alex@alexandre:~$ sudo modprobe -v -n nvidia
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.32-ARCH/kernel/drivers/char/agp/agpgart.ko
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.32-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko

I will try to dump the kernel messages, but don't have a serial port, maybe with an usb convertor.

Not that this is worth anything, but... I have the same issue with 195.36.03 (in the process of making my own .08 ebuild) on a gentoo ~amd64 system running 2 8800gts and 2.6.33.

Just as described, the system will immediately and completely freeze upon 'modprobe nvidia' or 'startx' usually with some corruption too.

Whats even weirder is that 2.6.33 won't successfully reboot after crashing (nvidia.ko is NOT automatically loaded at boot). The boot messages complain about all sorts of module problems (I will have to capture them next time.) and stalls in the booting process.

After a crash, I have to boot into a different kernel, remove the nvidia module from 2.6.33's modules, reboot into 2.6.33 (at this point, it will reboot to a somewhat functioning system, but fails to load any modules), run 'depmod -a', then reboot again to get 2.6.33 booting and loading other modules properly.

I'm probably just muddying the waters, so I will hold off on any other testing at least until I get .08 built.

Old thread, but maybe someone else will be looking for a solution and run across this thread before seeing the VGA_ARB thread...

Does this patch fix your problem?
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=142656

Worked for me anyhow.
