Default 2.6 is upon us

With 2.6.0-test8 out 2.6 is nearing completion. I would like to know the status for the NV dirver's compatibility with this new and extremely efficient kernel.

I just tried version 4496 of the NVidia installer with kernel 2.6.0-test8, and it does not work. The installer program complains that it cannot find the modversions.h file, and compiling by hand gives that error plus lots of other ones.

Hopefully this will be fixed soon; 2.6 will probably be released quite soon, and it would be a real shame if NVidia's driver doesn't work by then.

Default 2.6 patches

Instructions for the 2.6 kernel can be found at http://minion.de . I have it working in test7 and test8 without too much issues. Couple tips:

- first install the kernel and get it working. Don't worry about the nvidia driver for now.
- install the driver according to the instructions provided at 'minion.de' .
- reboot.

The minion.de patch currently performs beautifully when the install instructions are followed carefully. It is simpler if you install the same nvidia driver version into a 2.4 kernel first using the installer however.

When 2.6 is released, I would expect nvidia to incorporate the changes necessary to have the installer work. It would be very beneficial to the community however, if they took some initiative to do so now as there is a working patch available out of house already.

Question NVidia install errors with 2.6-test8 on Fedora Core

I've tried following the instructions to the letter at minion.de, but the installer always fails with a dump when running make install. Same thing when following the directions to update nvidia-installer itself -- it displays "Unable to compile blah blah blah" with a register dump. Anyone else seen this / know how to fix this?

Few people see:
Quote:
Unable to compile blah blah blah" with a register dump
when compiling anything. That would be a pretty unorthodox makefile...

How about which guideline you're following, there are at least 3 major install options outlined in the readme from minion. It wouldn't hurt to be more descriptive either.

Default no problem

I've seen that no modversions.h error. I fixed the path and still saw the error, so I tried one of the other ways to compile.

NV*run --extract-only
cd *pkg2
tar zxf ../ Linux gz
cd usr/src/nv
patch-p1 ../../../../*diff
ln -s Makefile.kbuild Makefile
make KERNDIR=/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.0 module
mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.6.0/kernel/drivers/video
cp nvidia.ko /lib/mod..........video
depmod 2.6.0
#not kern config nvidia riva or agpgart or framebuffer
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.0/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko

Default but no glx

In the previous message I told how to get kernel 2.6 and nvidia working together. Right now I'm in X but only with X's nv driver.

When I have X load "nvidia" instead of "nv", it works for a minute, then keyboard stops working, then mouse can't scroll around virtual space, then I'm dead, reboot.

When X loads nvidia instead of nv, /proc/driver/nvidia/status says nvidia loaded, agp8. That's good.

/var/log/X*.0.log says nvidia has NV_GLX but X load of "glx" reports failure.

Changes I make to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
# Load "vesa"
# Load "dri"
# Load "GLcore"
then substitute "nvidia" for "nv"

Actually I didn't get those lib paths right in the last message. Here's what I have now--
