I turned off the top two HUD elements, just as I did in the original. Looks nice.

Is it my memory failing or does this new guy Ezio seems to roof run, sprint and climb a lot slower overall than Altair did?

Serious? Wow, I must be totally jaded by AC:Bloodlines that I just finished 2 days ago. That game makes Ezio seem like a snail.
Edit: Very impressed by this game. They really have change a lot and improved this game immensely over the first one. So many things to do. Missions have great variety. Combat is fun so far but fists are getting a bit old even if I am kicking butt.

Yea no kidding. They give you the stupid icon then you have to try to "match the key". Stupid. It's like a mini-game lol.

So haven't played either of these. Worth getting the first one or go straight to this one?

Even using the Xbox controller, which I am, those icons are annoying... the face buttons are fine because of the colors, but "press the camera key" makes me go "huh?"

Well maybe goto Wikipedia and see if you can get a synopsis of the story from the first one. This one is better, story and gameplay... so at this point if you dont feel like spending the 6-8+ hours on the first one, at least read up on the story. Its a trilogy of games that tells a bigger story.

Yeah the keys take a little while to get used to, but honestly now they are pretty much second nature. The only button config they have wrong is the grab when you do a super jump, it's the same as let go. Which is completely silly if you miss the grab and tap it then you fall... they should have used main hand (Attack) instead
