What does ATI vs. nVidia have to do with any of it?
It's PC hardware enthusiast versus otherwise.

I'll give it a try when it comes out.
This is the future--virtualization and cloud computing. The trend is instead of buying hardware you rent hardware just for the time you need it. The physical hardware is accessed remotely. Unfortunately, I can't imagine who their target market is. PC gamers? Maybe gaming Internet cafes in Asia?

That's a good point, I doubt console gamers are going to flock to PC gaming just because of this. A set-top box with real controller support and Xbox Live type features would be needed for them.

You really think this service will offer low prices? Think about the computing power required to render a game, compress it, and send it at 720p. Now scale that up by 100,000.

![]() I was just making a comparison to show the difference between GOOD and POPULAR since proliferazor said that popular=good. I wasn't talking about OnLive being cheap.

So they will make money, but I think you will see either quality drop (e.g. 720p down to 480p) or prices increase if the service takes off. |

![]() I really have no interest what so ever in how the service works, how much it costs or how likely it is to succeed, I'm only concerned about the effect it could have on the industry. That is all.

Then don't draw the parallel.

The only reason I responded the way I did in this thread is that the majority of the PC enthusiasts (read: fanboy euphemism) responded to this thread as if it was the biggest thing to threaten PC gaming since the emergence of next gen consoles. If anything, this could help PC gaming, as it may eliminate the learning curve for upgrading PC's. I mean aren't all these OnLive players going to be playing multiplayer with other PC gamers? Wouldn't that help the platform? |
