The 5870s were relatively cheap on release day, at least in Germany. The prices went up drastically later on. See here for example. It's the same for all models.

You guys are going to be surprised by how much new Nvidia card is faster then HD5870, it will surprise AMD/ATI. Good Job Nvidia on hiding numbers

If the 480 is $499 it better be. If the 470 is faster and debuts at $349 now that will be nice.

Maybe to stop from ATI releasing a refresh before release? By hiding performance ATI can't prep a refresh without knowing how much more performance they need to add.

It is a bit naive to think that ATI doesn't know about Fermi performance yet, also they need months to prepare a refresh and make it available, not days.
There have been stricter NDAs before, when R420 came out for example.
